My childhood was nurtured by the landscapes of Colorado and Southern California. Both Cultural sensibilities along with a lot of travel inform my life and work.
My education was both experiential and institutional. I earned my MFA through Plymouth University, UK. Many years prior, I began printing with Master Printer, Craig O’Brien. He printed with a slew of greats, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper John, Andy Warhol to name a few. Craig guided me on a path towards experimental Monotypes.
For my undergraduate studies I attended, The San Francisco Art Institute and earned my BA from The Evergreen State College. Over the years I have attended artist residencies in Berlin, NYC, Brooklyn, Italy, Marfa, TX, and facilitated studio practice at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, CO.
My Colorado Art Studio is on my farm. I have both observed and interrupted nature, documenting my observations in field notes, photography, sketches, and video. I have gardened and ranched imposing my privileged preferences through choreographing my garden and land. Nature has generously fought back and offered life and seeds and varieties that I had neglected to value at the top of a humanized hierarchy until worn by miles and blessed by new understandings, have come to embrace the amazing edible bounty inherently pre-existing both on the farmland and in wild places.
I have always known life with horses. A soft-mouthed jack was my nanny; I spent my early years feeling his fur through my toddler's hands. I’d sit on Petunia while he grazed in the pasture. No halter, just he and I under a big western sky for countless hours. This very relaxed being together with an equine is my foundation of horsemanship. Later in my youth, I competed in Western disciplines. As a young adult, I worked on ranches and enjoyed team roping.
But Trail riding, experiencing nature’s grandeur and the sense of freedom, covering ground became an unstoppable driving passion in my life consuming me as I began endurance racing in the late ’90s. Mile by mile, viscerally experiencing the West’s surfaces; rock formations, sheets of grasses giving visibility to unseen winds; riding Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon, and Colorado, I fell ever more under mother nature's spell.
Similarly playing in sets of waves in the Pacific is indelibly in my body memory, my feet knowing the sandy beach, eyes longing for Bougainvillea, and nostrils yearning for the scent of kelp and sea.
My work draws on my experience and relationships with nature and her creatures. My artistic inquiry examines how history and memory resort and may reflect more about human storytelling than the event.
Mi infancia se llenó de la belleza de los paisajes de Coloraro y el sur de California. La sensibilidad de dos culturas, junto con muchos viajes, me han brindaddo conocimiento en la vida y mi trabajo.
Mi educación fue experimental y académica. Tengo un Masters en Bellas Artes de la Univesidad Plymouth de Reino Unido. Años atrás, comencé a pintar con el Maestro Pintor, Craig O’Brien. Imprimió con grandes personalidades como: Rauschenberg, Jasper John, Andy Warhol por mencionar algunos. Creig me guió por el camino de los monotipos experimentales.
Para el posgrado asistí al Istituto de Arte de San Francico y obtuve mi licenciatura de la Universidad de “The Evergreen State Collage”. A lo largo de los años he asistido a residencias de artistas en Berlin, en la Ciudad de Nueva York, Brooklyn, Italia, Marga, TX y hice una estancia artistca en Anderson Ranch en Snowmass, Colorado.
Mi estududio de arte está en mi granja en Colorado. He observado ininterrumpidamente la naturaleza y documentado mis observaciones en notas de campo, fotografías, bocetos y videos. He hecho jardineria y trabajo de rancho, coordinando la estética del paisaje como una coreografía danzante. La naturaleza ha luchado encontra de mis instrucciones y en lugar de danzar me ofrece semillas y vida. No había valorado lo que me ofrecia hasta que fui bendecida con un nuevo conocimiento de la granja y la tierra.
Siempre he conocido una vida con los caballos. Un caballo soft-mouthed jack fue mi niñera. Me pase mis primeros pasos sintiendo su pelaje a través de mis dedos cuando apenas era una bebé. Me sentaba en Petunia mientras él pastaba. Sin cabestro, solo él y yo bajo un gran cielo occidental durante incontables horas. Este estilo muy relajado junto con un equino es mi base de la equitación. Más tarde, en mi juventud, compití en disciplinas occidentales. Cuando era joven, trabajé en ranchos y disfruté el deporte de lazo por pareja (team roping).
Para mí, montar en senderos y experimentar la grandeza de la naturaleza y la sensación de libertad, en terrenos abiertos, se convirtió en una pasión imparable en mi vida y me enfoqué de lleno en las carreras de resistencia a finales de la década de los 90. Milla a milla, experimentando sin importarme las superficies del Oeste; donde había formaciones rocosas, hojas de hierba que impedian la visibilidasd por los vientos; montando en Montana, Nuevo México, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon y Colorado, me sentia cada vez más envuelta y hechizada por la madre naturaleza.
De manera similar, juegan en conjuntos las olas del Pacífico que están indeleblemente en la memoria de mi cuerpo, mis pies conocen la playa arenosa, mis ojos anhelan las bugambilias y mi nariz el aroma de las algas marinas y el mar.
Mi trabajo se basa en mi experiencia y relación con la naturaleza y sus diferentes especies. Mi investigación artística examina cómo la historia y la memoria recurren y puede reflejar más sobre la narración humana que un mismo evento.
